1. The culture industry
Been listening to The Partially Examined Life episode about Adorno on the Culture Industry. The culture industry being the mass production of films etc for the purposes of rendering people docile and perfect for the consumption of unnecessary goods.
They say Adorno (/Horkheimer) very explicitly wanted it referred to as a culture industry, to make clear it was driven from above and imposed. Not a natural representation of the desires of the masses.
Can definitely see the parallels with the social industry and guess this is probably why Richard Seymour used that name in The Twittering Machine.
